Comforts of Home
There comes a time when it is appropriate — for reasons different for each individual and family — to move from independent living into a senior care residence such as Lockport Presbyterian Home.
"To all the kind 'angels' who so lovingly cared for our Mom: We can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate all you do. You have a great facility and staff." |
Individuals or couples may be moving from the place which they have called home since they were first married or since they moved into a smaller, easier-to-care-for place. They will find the transition into life in a senior care residence to be positive and easily accomplished if the entire family takes into consideration the following suggestions:
- Mark all personal items with name.
- Compile an inventory of all personal items including furniture and jewelry.
Recommended articles of clothing to bring:
- Seven changes of clothing for winter and summer seasons as well as seven complete sets of underwear
- Two button-down sweaters with pockets
- Raincoat and winter jacket and boots
- Only one to four pair of shoes as storage space is usually limited
- Slippers with non-skid soles and full foot construction
- Three to five sets of pajamas or nightgowns
Personal items:
- Jewelry, if worn regularly
- Religious items, if used to having them nearby
- Personal care products in medium size for easy handling and storage
- Writing paper, pens, and postage stamps, if this is a preferred method of keeping in touch
Suggested room accessories:
- Family pictures for the walls or one album of memories
- Comfortable chair for reading and relaxing (not a swivel rocker)
- Bedspread and curtains that will complement the new living space and personal pillow
- Small decorations for room and seasonal decorations for door
- Clock that can be easily seen
- TV, radio, CD, or tape player, all with easily seen on/off buttons
- Telephone with answering machine so there is no chance of missing calls from family and friends
- Magnetic or cork board
Other suggestions:
- Large print books; staff can arrange with the local library for such books on a regular basis
- Craft items in a small basket, if still active with a hobby
- Any snacks should be in a metal or plastic closed container
- Purchase a subscription to the local newspaper and/or cable TV
These suggestions were compiled by the staff at Lockport Presbyterian Home. Please call them at 716-434-8805 for more information.
